Lesbos

Mytilene , castles and noble mansions, olive groves and beaches as far as the eye can see, a petrified forest and bird sanctuary wetlands, home of sardines and ouzo … and much more

Lesvos, in the North Aegean, balanced between Anatolia and the West, is the birthplace of the poet Sappho, the poet Alcaeus, the pure painter Theophilos and the writer Myrivillis. The third largest island of Greece is a place of rare natural beauty, architectural marvels, a petrified forest, medieval fortress towns and a Mediterranean climate. Most of its surface is covered with olive trees, leading to two almost enclosed, deep and fish-filled gulfs. Other attractions include bustling traditional villages, miles of beaches, ouzo distilleries open to visitors, and delicious flavours to accompany your drink. These are just some of the surprises that await you on this enchanting island, which Nobel laureate Odysseus Elitis likened to “a plane leaf that someone threw into the sea.”

What to do in Lesvos?

Start your cruise in Mytilini, the largest town and main harbour, and then make your way along the northeast coast to Molyvos and Petra. Then head west to see the petrified forest at Eressos and Sigri before heading south to Plomari, where the ouzo factories are located, before turning inland to the mountain village of Agiasos. That’s Lesvos in a nutshell, if we skip the beaches, the hot springs, the birdwatching in the wetlands, the long, leisurely feasts of local seafood and some breathtaking views of the Aegean.

Mytilini, the real capital of Mytilene and a magnet for visitors from the eastern Aegean, showcases beautiful old buildings on the water’s edge, most notably the impressive church of Agios Therapon. All this culminates in the Byzantine castle of Franko, rising out of the pine forests behind the hill. As the cultural and commercial centre of the island, Mytilini offers many ways to spend your time: whether you visit the sights such as the ancient theatre, the Ottoman baths, the mosque and explore the streets lined with wonderful neoclassical buildings with the scent of Anatolia; or browse the rare treasures in the Archaeological Museum, the Teriade collection of modern masters, the Theofilos museum, libraries, galleries and folklore performances.

Tek emsali Mora Yarımadası’ndaki Monemvasia olan Molivos Avrupa’daki en güzel ortaçağ hisarlarına rakip olabilir. Similarly, its houses clutch a steep cliff, facing the Mediterranean Sea. The structure and layout of the town and its 13th-century Genoese fortress have not changed for centuries. As you wander through the alleyways, don’t forget to visit the mansions and stone houses that resemble Anatolian architecture with their colourful doors and windows and covered wooden balconies, with elegant Turkish fountains scattered at intervals.

A bird paradise: Kalloni wetlands
More than 252 bird species have found shelter in the Kalloni wetlands. Not surprisingly, this bird diversity and rarity makes Kalloni one of the ten most famous habitats in Europe.

Thermal springs of Eftalous
This island in the North Aegean is a nest of natural wonders. Among the bushy rocks and geological sculptures emerging from the sea, you can come across the thermal waters of Eftalous. Spring water comes out of underwater springs at 43.6-46.5 degrees centigrade and is famous for its health benefits.

Bull slaughtered as a sacrifice
The island ritual, a pagan belief dating back to ancient times, is still performed in July at Agia Paraskevi. A healthy bull is sacrificed on horseback in a procession and decorated with garlands and ornaments before it is eaten after three days of dancing and feasting.
