Limni, Castles, a 5,000-year-old old town, stone villages, impressive attractions, delicious local food and wine
What to do in Limni?
A holiday in the traditional villages is a true masterpiece. From Myrina to Kontopouli, Romanos, Kontia, Katalako, whichever village you stop at, you will immediately recognise the art of stonemasonry, with its amazing finishing touches, decorative serenity and walls. The ‘mantra’ of Limni is not an isolated sheepfold or barn of the kind you will encounter elsewhere. Unlike others, these are roofed, efficient farm complexes that can hold people and animals together
Mysteries of Hephaistia and Cabeirian
Your journey to the North Aegean includes a number of important attractions. Discover them all! Hephaistia is what remains of an ancient city that flourished between the 5th and 4th centuries. The god Hephaistos was the patron of Hephaistia, making it an important centre for his worship. In the north of Cape Chole you will see the famous temple of the Caberians and the worship of Hephaistos. According to legend, the two men called Cabeiroi were the children of Hephaistos and the temple was the appearance of the Caberian Mysteries, associated with the rebirth of nature and fertility.
Golden yellow dunes
Located in the northern part of Limnos, these natural wonders cover 70,000 square metres. This surreal landscape, a rare phenomenon in Greece, is attracting more and more visitors.
Salt lakes of the island
Near Kontopouli is a wetland consisting of three lakes, Alyki, Hortarolimni and Asprolimni (or Salty, Grassy and White). Alyki is the largest. It communicates with the sea through a small canal and in summer the sea water dries up to produce high quality salt. As a stopover for many migratory birds, all three lakes are part of the EU’s Natura 2000 protection network.
