A FAIRY TALE IN THE AEGEAN

Lipsi, a small piece of land surrounded by 24 islets forming a necklace with its sparkle in the south-east of the Aegean, north of Lerosand east of Patmos, awaits you for the holiday of your dreams. This is the island of Lipsi – the mythical Ogygia – the island of the Kalypso goddesses.

From a naturally protected bay to a small village that sweeps like layers of amphitheatre, Lipsi travels through the centuries while preserving its authentic culture. Today, it offers itself to visitors who want to escape somewhere and experience the peace that is the gift of nature in the quiet company of its hospitable inhabitants. Enjoy the crystal clear water of this unique beauty by swimming, diving and fishing.

Wander the narrow alleyways, take in the scenery, sample the local cuisine and live as the inhabitants do by taking part in celebrations that perpetuate the island’s values and traditions. Experience the unique experience that this small island with its own character and confidence has in store for you.

What to do in Lipsi?

Viticulture is a long-standing tradition in Lipsi. So much so that its famous dessert wine is sent as far as the Vatican to be used in the Holy Communion (Eucharist). The inhabitants of the island are proud of this delicious product and to celebrate, they organise a festival that starts on 10 August and lasts at least three days. If you are there on these dates, they will naturally offer you a glass or two to celebrate with their traditional song and dance.

The 23rd of August is dedicated to “Panagia tou Harou” and hundreds of visitors flock to the island to pay their respects to the miraculous icon in the church of the same name. This traditional feast begins with evening prayers on the beach and in two large squares and ends within twenty-four hours.

Fenced rocky outcrops and Katsadia, Kampos, With sandy beaches such as Tourkomnima, Platys Gialos and Lientou or pebbly beaches with crystal clear water such as Hohlakoura, Xerokampos, Papantria and Monodendri, it offers you endless revitalisation and relaxation.

Discover the raw beauty of the landscape
No day in Lipsi goes by without experiencing something new or original. With twenty-four islets surrounding it, a “living museum of natural history” awaits discovery. With its rich variety of animals and plants catalogued in the Natura 2000 catalogue, it is an ideal refuge for black falcons, black gulls and other birds whose nests are found in suitable nooks and crannies, as well as for Μonachus-monachus fish and sea turtles.

Swim in the turquoise waters, dive into the marvellous seabed or visit secluded coves, cave formations, bays and beaches on a boat, if you are lucky a dolphin will accompany you!

For creative taste buds
Resisting the invasion of “tourist cuisine”, the inhabitants of Lipsi produce their own delicious, traditional recipes and delicacies. The seas generously offer their treasures: crayfish, prawns, crabs, clams, oysters, fish and octopus to accompany the ouzo you drink in the harbour at the meeting place, where it doesn’t take long to form a large convivial group and where residents and visitors of the island come together.

If you prefer home-cooked food, try stuffed mountain goat, courgette flowers stuffed with rice, pitaroudia and giaprakia. Accompany your meal with home-kneaded bread and local Lipsi wine. For a sweet treat, the honey pougakia, patsavouropita and xerotigana leave no room for complaint. The game of flavour never ends at Lipsi!

Trails – Walking paths
If you like hiking trails, follow the paved paths past the holy church of “Kimisi tis Theotokou” – recognised as the Holy Mother of God – and up to the temple of “Ano Kimisi” or climb to the highest point of “Hora” (the main village), the mill of “Arayis”. The vast blue of the Aegean will be reward enough.

If you want to go higher, the castle with the ruins of the acropolis is located at the highest point of the island. The peacefulness of the view will conquer your heart!
